Guest Post – Portuguese Style Crab Cake

Guest Post – Portuguese Style Crab Cake

For today’s post, I’m featuring a recipe from one of my best friends Sergio.  I’m fortunate to have two life long friends (one from kindergarten and one from 2nd grade) and I’m really happy that they both love food and cooking.  Sergio has had a long history of being around great food and he’s decided to share one of his house-made dishes.  This dish was both fun to make and turned out to be delicious.  It’s clear that this guy knows what’s up in the kitchen.

Sergio writes:

As Memorial Day is here and the Summer is upon us, to me it’s all about spending time with family and friends. Beaches, Bubbly, and BarBeQues!!  The best memories are down the shore (if you’re from Jersey) and having some of the best fresh seafood. That brings me to my first recipe post. The Portuguese Style Crab Cake. There really isn’t anything Portuguese about it other than a Portuguese guy made the dish and it’s delicious. So enjoy!!  And special thanks to Vinny and the Zen n Potatoes crew for having me as a special guest and for all the wonderful photos.

Shellfish Cioppino

Shellfish Cioppino

Recently I was given, yes given, a Le Creuset dutch oven.  A friend of mine is moving back to Cali and didn’t want to haul it.  I attempted to pay for it but she would not accept money.  Armed with this new possession, I felt the need to employ it as soon as possible.

I had a Groupon to Ippolito’s Seafood in South Philly so I felt the need to use it.  With some crab that I already had laying around and a couple simple ingredients from the pantry, along with some fresh fish, this became a no brainer.

Smokey Crab Heirloom Gazpacho

Smokey Crab Heirloom Gazpacho

Ok ok so I’ve got crab on the brain.  Sue me.  Seriously the stuff is delicious.

Recently, I was given a bunch of heirloom tomatoes by a friend.  These things are like straight from the farmer’s market legit and they were perfectly ripe.  I thought I should use them quickly so that I could maximize the flavor potential.  I decided that cooking them would actually lessen my enjoyment.

Enter gazpacho!

It’s basically like fancy salsa, or so another friend of mine told me.  This version while not traditional has a nod to some classic recipes but with a a little twist.

Crab and White Cheddar Omelette

Crab and White Cheddar Omelette

Today’s recipe inspiration comes directly from one of my favorite bars in Philadelphia.  The food at Varga Bar is consistently delicious and their beer selection is off the charts.  They only feature American craft ales and each time I have eaten or drank there I have had an awesome time.  Anyhoo, last night I had their jumbo lump crab fries.  This was not the first time I had them but it occurred to me that I wanted to eat more crab.  I woke up early the next day and set off to put these ingredients to use for a good breakfast.
