Japanese Beef Plate

Japanese Beef Plate

I went to The Prime Rib for a solo dinner on Wednesday night (#ballerstatus) and left with a doggie bag containing an 8 oz. filet mignon. Poor me, right? Confronted with a surplus of delicious, tender medium rare beef I knew the best way to use it would be in as simple a preparation as possible.

Here, I opted to thinly slice the meat and plate it with some chilled soba noodles and sliced tomato. The meaty, flavorful heirloom tomato–one of the last of the season–really loves the tonkatsu sauce; a well-dressed slice of tomato paired with the beef is a mouthful of pure bliss. The soba noodles add a bit of spice and some contrasting textures. Umami all over this ish. I was more than satisfied with the final result.

Grape Arugula Tuna Salad

Grape Arugula Tuna Salad

Short on time.  Tired after work.  What else is new?  Oh, and of course you want to eat more healthily.  It’s the same old story.  Well this recipe came out of all of the requirements I just listed.

I just read an article the other day by Mark Bitman called Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?  In this article, he breaks down some figures and he does show that junk food or processed food in general is not cheaper, it’s merely easier.  He does go into the a quick discussion about certain families that do not have a grocery store within 10 miles of their home and lack adequate public transportation.  The availability of fresh ingredients is definitely a problem in certain areas of the country but I am not really qualified to comment on it.

Either way, I think this meal is super simple and it’s pretty cheap to throw together.  The processing on the food is quite minimal and the flavor is pretty fantastic.

Garlic Ginger Hake with Tangy Rice

Garlic Ginger Hake with Tangy Rice

I had a ridiculous weekend of eating.  One of my best friends got married and he threw no less than a stellar, epic, foodie wet dream wedding.  He and his wife chose The Venetian and I was honestly wowed by the place in presentation, service and food quality.  With all these extra pounds that I picked up, I felt that I needed to get back to basics with my first meal back.  I also wanted easy because I just didn’t feel like putting forth lots of effort.  This meal accomplished both of these requirements.  It’s super easy to make and it has amazing flavor.  Finally, hake was on sale so it all just came together.

Japanese Curry Powder

Japanese Curry Powder

This week’s recipe comes out of failure, specifically my repeated failure to cook a satisfactory version of Japanese Curry. I have done it the quick & easy (curry block) way and failed. I have asked my Japanese grandmother for her recipe, the one so fondly remembered from my childhood, and failed. I have tried the Marc Matsumoto/No Recipes version, scoured the internet and cross-referenced many versions of the dish, gotten down on my knees and prayed to the Heavens to grant me mercy & smile upon my stovetop, to no avail, all roads leading to failure. Japanese Curry is my white whale, and like Ahab’s aquatic nemesis, it will inevitably one day lead to a watery grave for me and my faithful crew.

(In this scenario, I am writing this post from aboard an old-timey whaling vessel by the light of a blubber lamp.)

I sincerely hope that I am learning from my failures, though if other aspects of my life are any indication, no, probably not. I intend to continue burning the midnight (whale) oil trying to figure this one out. The problem is not necessarily that I am producing something inedible, more like I am being especially hard on myself because the dish is so important to me. If I ever post a recipe for it, I need it to be a version that can perhaps inspire in you all some glimmer of the same devotion I feel.

In the meantime, here is the curry powder blend which I use to make Japanese Curry (among other applications).

Beer Cumin Chicken Pita

Beer Cumin Chicken Pita

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that I love the Royal Tavern.  They have a dish called the Chicken Frankie which is by far one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted.  It’s described as curry chicken, indian coleslaw and lovash.  It tastes like heaven.  Just the mere thought of it makes me happy.  This meal is a result of me thinking about that dish.

Mondays are one of my main cooking nights.  It’s an evening where I have the time and energy to focus on what is important to me.  I normally get home from work, go for a run, make a nice meal and then go play Quizzo.  The wonderful thing about cooking is that besides saving me money, it allows me to be as creative as I want.  I can normally satisfy my food cravings rather easily in my own kitchen rather than seeking out what I want on a menu somewhere.  Cooking also allows me to control my calorie intake.  As a food and beer lover, it’s very easy for me to make bad decisions when at a pub.  I find that if I’m out, on say a Monday, if I eat beforehand, I’m satisfied and less prone to having more beer than I should and late night curry fries.
